2B or Not 2B Davin Smith Sketch Book

For me drawing is a very important and rewarding part of practice, a practice that maintains a connection between thought and the physical.

Two of my career highlights were participating in separate masterclasses by Peter Wilson (Bolles Wilson) and RCR (Olot) where manual presentation skills were encouraged, experimental, valued, and immediate. Intrinsic to architectural design practice/thinking/process.

When making a mark it allows a unique connection to form between hand, mind and subject that unveils new insights and possibilities. Whether sketching while traveling, communicating a plan or section, or engaging in creative play, each action deepens understanding.

It also creates a wonderful ‘space’ between audience and author, something much harder to achieve with more straightforward architectural visualisation or detached virtual rendering. Room in the line for imagination to interpret. Open ended lines that communicate conviction and/or a multitude of decisions. I believe the best ways to understand an architect is through meeting one of their drawings.
